On Saturday, April 30, in honor of Earth Day, C.A.R.E. members got grubby cleaning up NOXIOUS WEEDS (Scots broom and Himalayan Blackberry) from the Gateway to the Island on SR 532. It was partly a beautification project, to remove weeds that had overgrown the slopes along the 532 right-of way, around the Camano Community Backyard Wildlife Habitat sign. Thane Tupper, Island Co.'s WSU Extension Noxious Weed program coordinator was on hand to help out with his hefty weed wrench used to pull the largest scots broom out by the roots. The steep slopes made for tough work, but in all, Doug Fries trailer was loaded to the brim with 1620 lbs of weeds that were taken to the dump. Island County accepted the organic trash for free. Many thanks to C.A.R.E. member Paul Booker for organizing the event, coordinating with the highway patrol to close the right lane, and also with DOT to provide orange vests for all the workers. Snohomish Conservation District and Snohomish County Noxious Weed Control program also helped out with a loan of their weed wrenches. Thanks also to the Stanwood Camano News for covering the event and helping spread the word about the noxious weed control program!
